YSF: WEEK 1.
About two months ago, I finally did something I've wanted to do for about a year: volunteer to be a mentor with The Young Storytellers Foundation. It is a raaaaad program in which mentors go into elementary schools and help 4th and 5th graders write screenplays. We (the mentors) meet with a select group of pretty (aka extremely) amazing students once a week for six weeks and guide them as they develop a 5-7 page script. We team up one-on-one, but they come up with all of their content...we're just their personal secretaries. At the end of the six weeks, the scripts are done and the mentors bring in a team of actors to act out all of the writers' screenplays in THE BIG SHOW (which is complete with a red carpet, paparazzi, and a pizza party).
We had our first meeting with the group of 11 today at an elementary school down on Slauson near LAX. We did some icebreaking exercises, told some stories, and got paired up into our writer-mentor teams. My main man, the bomb-diggity, is DJ. We're both have "Junior" at the end of our name, cause that's how we roll.
Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens...I've heard nothing but fantastic things about the experience. If you're in the LA area and have an hour to spare each week, check it out next semester...
