YSF: WEEK 1.

About two months ago, I finally did something I've wanted to do for about a year: volunteer to be a mentor with The Young Storytellers Foundation. It is a raaaaad program in which mentors go into elementary schools and help 4th and 5th graders write screenplays.

We (the mentors) meet with a select group of pretty (aka extremely) amazing students once a week for six weeks and guide them as they develop a 5-7 page script. We team up one-on-one, but they come up with all of their content...we're just their personal secretaries. At the end of the six weeks, the scripts are done and the mentors bring in a team of actors to act out all of the writers' screenplays in THE BIG SHOW (which is complete with a red carpet, paparazzi, and a pizza party).

We had our first meeting with the group of 11 today at an elementary school down on Slauson near LAX. We did some icebreaking exercises, told some stories, and got paired up into our writer-mentor teams. My main man, the bomb-diggity, is DJ. We're both have "Junior" at the end of our name, cause that's how we roll.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens...I've heard nothing but fantastic things about the experience. If you're in the LA area and have an hour to spare each week, check it out next semester...

6-2.

Yo, did Coldplay just play FOUR songs on SNL?

Anyway, bad day for my boys...11 point favorites, they fell to Virginia, 24-17. Fumbling on 2nd-and-goal never makes it easy. I knew as soon as I started talking trash and thinking about Thanksgiving and December, something would come back and pop me in the mouth. The fact that I had to wear our flag football team's colors of Orange and Navy this morning probably didn't help.

Doesn't feel so good.

The (almost) good news was that Virginia Tech lost, so if we took care of our business, we'd be sitting nice on the way to Tampa. Instead, the ACC-Coastal is a mess.

The other (kind of) good news is that I made it out to play with the aforementioned flag football team in Pasadena this morning. The perfect mix of fun, competitiveness, and trips to Sports Authority (our captain has one of those playbook wristbands!) . Check the line of scrimmage:

08-10-25_2.png

My daily stat line: Targeted 3 times. 1 incompletion, 1 TD reception (approx 40 yards), 1 dropped potentially-game-winning TD (approx 50 yards). After the game, no one mentions the catch, everyone hates me for the drop. I thought I'd come home and let the Tech game heal the wounds...bad idea.

Instead, it was like taking a bath in salty, homemade lemonade.

JM/LOCAL-83 PLAYING CARDS.

Pretty proud of these...they should be headed out to Local-83 members any day now. I'll save the fine details for the recipients to discover...

SEATTLE.

Went up to visit FFF in the 206, got to check out some of my favorite things --

The Ace Hotel.
Not as amazing as the Portland property, but still super cool...especially with Arkitip matches at the front desk and a Kaws canvas above the bed:
sc_08-10-23_1.png

Kings of Leon.
I saw them in LA last Wednesday...the show was good but didn't meet the astronomical expectations (not the right venue to see them I don't think). So when I found out that FFF and I could roll to a show together, we treated it like the summer of 2000. This past Monday night at the Paramount was KILLER. The theatre, the crowd, and the band all seemed at an entirely different level than I had seen on 10/15. It was a loud, crazy, rocknrolla throwdown, capped off by Eddie Vedder running out and singing on Slow Night, So Long to end the set. Best show I've seen in a while-y cyrus. You will be doing yourself a disservice if you miss them on this tour.
sc_08-10-23_2.png

Virgin Atlantic.
I was scared of the text-anyone-on-any-seat-of-the-plane feature but stayed busy with all the other sweet entertainment options my seat had to offer. They actually make flying comfortable in a time when travel seems intolerable. Great folks too...

Shivering.
Yo! Do y'all know how cold it is up there? It's been like 90 degrees in Los Angeles every day since like 2006 -- this guy can't just adapt to rainy sub-40 temperatures in a few hours. I layered every longsleeve item I packed and rolled like Joey from Friends the entire time I was there. Meanwhile FFF is wearing just a t-shirt...but oh wait he's got 2 baguettes with him (one stored in the stomach), that must be the secret...

6-1, #18.

Georgia Tech goes into Death Valley and defeats Clemson, 21-17.

Virginia Tech also loses to Boston College, putting GT in first place in the ACC's Coastal Division. VT holds the tiebreaker, but it's on.

Georgia Tech also shows up at #18 in the season's first BCS rankings. They are the ACC's highest ranked team.

Lastly, shoutout to SI.com for being completely wrong with their pre-season predictions.

TUESDAY NIGHT PARTY: SANTOGOLD, THE TING TINGS, MATES OF STATE, ALICE SMITH, AND LOW VS. DIAMOND AT THE WILTERN

It went OFF tonight at The Wiltern. Santogold's set was a blast. If I was undecided about what to wear on Halloween, watching her backup dancers solved that problem pretty quickly. Anyone who is smart, traveling in a group of 3 on Halloween weekend, lives near an American Apparel store, and can replicate NASA gear out of household items should do the same. Anyway, it was like a party in Kingston if Kingston was in a Pixar movie being shot in space. AND I found out that Santi was allegedly involved in one of my favorite records ever, Res' "How I Do" (iTunes). Talk about a one stop shop of delightfulness.

Santogold's record on iTunes.

The Ting Tings had a Separate But Equal find-yourself-bouncing-and-clapping-and-slow-motion-white-boy-breakdance-attempting effect. Good thing for me (I think) "looking" and "feeling" foolish are like R and V on the spectrum.

The Ting Tings' record on iTunes.

Mates of State's latest on iTunes. Check out the older stuff too...

Great prologue for what's to transpire tomorrow night...

5-1.

Georgia Tech 10, Gardner-Webb 7.

Tech wins behind third-string quarterback Calvin Booker. Biggest news is that we've beaten every Bulldogs-team on the schedule so far.

Schedule gets rolling though the rest of the season. Hopefully Nesbitt's back out there on Saturday.

RACE JOURNAL.

Race Journal

October 4, 2008
Manhattan Beach 10k
The streets of Manhattan Beach, CA

For the first time in a while, I made a specific, non-shuffled playlist for a race. I was going into battle mode versus the innocent citizens of Manhattan Beach. I also, for the first time ever, chose to wear no pants in a race. These factors, I decided, would lead me to victory.

1. Chopped and Screwed (feat. Ludacris) - T-Pain
2. Closer - Kings of Leon
3. Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon
4. Blueprint 2 - Jay-Z
5. Let The Beat Build - Lil' Wayne
6. Golden Boys - Res
7. Top Back - T.I.
8. Viva la Vida - Coldplay
9. I'm Me - Lil' Wayne
10. I'm Me - Lil' Wayne

Notice how we start off fun and build towards complete aggression and rage. Good stuff. I would like to report that the race officially got Chopped and Screwed, officially dance-dance crewed (oh Teddy Pippilongstockings, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?). I still can't stop listening to Only By The Night, no matter where I am and what I'm doing. Then you know I gots to hang with Jay, Tip, and Weezy. By the time I'm Me comes on for the second time, I'm seriously mentally unstable and probably look like I'm trying to fight a pack of swarming bees.

I finished at 42:23...6:50/mi average, 146th overall out of about 4000. All rubbish until we can get that sub-40-minute time.

Notice the shoutout to 'Hov then the Star Trak hands as I try to outrun (and spit on...? what is that face??) the innocent joggers in front of me.

SCOTTY 1, UV RAYS 0.

sc_08-10-09b.png

Oh, Frogskins. The first love of my life. What was a sentimental purchase 2 years ago when they started the re-release has become a sad obsession (shoutout to KJ for pouring gas on the fire by hooking it up to the point of ridiculousness).

I'm still looking for Oakley to re-release that first pair I owned (purchased at Athletic Attic in the Glynn Place Mall along with some neon green Croakies, thank you very much), Speckled Grey frames with Purple Iridium Lenses. H-O-T. Just like the Sebagos, ankle socks, and stonewashed denim shorts I was prolly rocking on a daily basis. Yessir.

I thought the Keith Richards Guitar Case was cool, but this one...

My dad raised us on Bond movies, so Connery was probably the first guy I saw as a larger-than-life hero. Still is.

BLUE MAGIC.

NLACS.png

I was lucky to be in de casa on Saturday night for the Dodgers' win over the Cubs. It the second-biggest sporting event I've ever attended and the first where the team I was rooting for actually WON (in 1991, I got to check out of school early and fly on a plane by myself to Atlanta to watch game 5 of the NLCS with my grandfather, but the Braves unfortunately lost that one). Anyway, I've never seen Dodger Stadium packed with so much excitement. Great night.

Like Torre said after the game to the crowd watching the celebration - stick around...we've still got 8 more to win.

Go Dodgers.

-Scotty

PS:
Talk about a DILEMMA - check out the evening of October 15 in Los Angeles:
National League Championship Series: Phillies vs Dodgers
Jay-Z re-opens the Hollywood Palladium
Kings of Leon at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live
Black Kids (and The Virgins) at Mayan Theatre
Fluffy at TBA Location
The final Presidential Debate airs
Project Runway picks who shows at Bryant Park

Busiest day in the history of time.

4-1.

True freshman QB Jaybo Shaw steps in for an injured Josh Nesbitt and leads Tech to victory over Duke (aka Durham High School's JV team), 27-0. Jonathan "Through The" Dwyer ran for 159 yards and Demaryius "Since You're A Pastor" Thomas had 230 yards receiving, including an 88-yard TD in the 4th quarter. Tech held Duke to 132 total yards (including a whopping 35 rushing yards). Not an amazing feat by any means considering Duke's own administration considers the team an "automatic win" for anyone they play, but a solid showing especially given the QB situation.

And some nice reading by Heather Dinich:
Georgia Tech has every right to be confident in the Coastal.
